Let’s Talk Wire Rope Hoists!
OMAHA Crane and Hoist Inc. offer various types of wire rope hoists; “packaged”, “open winch/built-up/open deck”. Each hoist style has its own set of distinct characteristics, features and benefits so choosing the correct hoist for your application or process is an essential step to ensuring safety, reliability, and cost effective operation throughout the life of the hoist. All too often we are asked to assess the nature or cause of a failed or poor-performing hoist and in many cases the conclusion was the wrong hoist type was selected for the application. This bodes the question; was the hoist selection based on an inexperienced promotion from a trusted supplier? Or was it based on being the lowest price? (We all know the difference between purchase price and operational cost!). It could very well be the facility housing the cranes was sold to a new tenant whose operational process demands were more than what the hoisting equipment was originally selected for. OMAHA Crane and Hoist has the time-tested experience to assist you in making the right choice.

Packaged Hoists:
Packaged hoists are your standard “off the shelf”, pre-engineered, mass-produced hoists and they typically range in capacity from 0.5 Tonne to 50 Tonne with some manufacturers offering up to 80 or 100 Tonnes capacity by “Twinning” two 40 Tonne or two 50 Tonne hoists on a single trolley. Using automotive manufacturing techniques, packaged hoists are very economical in price, feature space-saving compact designs and are quite versatile in many light to medium duty applications. From a maintenance/service perspective and due to the nature of their economical design, packaged hoists come at a higher operational cost when compared to open winch or built-up styles. Packaged hoists utilize lighter gage materials, have more moving parts and wear items such as rope guides and require high-strength-compacted wire rope. Additionally, many manufacturers of packaged hoists utilize their own proprietary mechanical and electrical components that aren’t readily available or easily serviced by or from your local industrial suppliers. These are just considerations and not intended to discourage packaged hoists in any way. Today, packaged hoists represent about 70-80%, or higher, of the global industrial lifting market. Properly selected for the intended application and duty cycle, a packaged hoist is a great economical choice but choose wisely as there are many brands to choose from.
